RNDr. Vladimír Čermák, DrSc. (1937) graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, in 1960, and joint the Geophysical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Worked in the Department of Radiometry and focused his interest on the measurements of the terrestrial heat flow. Constructed a heat flow map of the country. As a post-doctorate fellow visited the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa, Canada (1968–1070), where as one of the first recognized and described the imprint of the recent climate changes on the subsurface temperature distribution. In the 1970s within a broad international cooperation organized the heat flow studies in Europe and initiated the preparation of the first heat flow map in the continental scale. Actively worked in the International Heat Flow Committee, part of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), in 1995–1999 served as its Chairman. In the Geophysical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences was its Director (1991–1998), was also one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Geophysical Society (1994–1998). Vladimir Cermak was the major convener of a series of the international workshops and conferences, in 2015 was the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the XXVIth General Assembly of the IUGG in Prague. From 1999 to 2015 was the Chairman of the Czech National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics. Vladimir Cermak is the author or co-author of several scientific monographs and of more than 300 scientific publications published in the country or abroad, mostly on various topics of Geothermics, Structure of the Earth, Utilization of the Geothermal Energy and of so-called Borehole Climatology.
