Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eduard Petrovský (1959) works in the Institute since 1985 and is member of the Team of Environmental and Applied Geophysics. He focuses on magnetic properties of rocks and their application to environmental problems. He is specialized in iron oxides in soils, sediments and atmosphere in relation to climatic changes and human/industrial activities. From 2003 to 2023 he acted as Chair of the former Department of Geomagnetism.
Eduard Petrovský graduated in 1984 from solid phase physics at the Faculty of Natural Science of the P.J. Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia). He received his PhD degree in 1995 at the Geophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Prague. At present, he is the Chair of the Board of the Institute of Geophysics.
Eduard Petrovský is internationally highly recognized expert in his research field. Among others, in 2007-2001 he was member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA), in 2001-2015 its Vice-President, and in 2015-2019 he acted as the IAGA President and member of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Between 2019 and 2023 he was an IUGG Bureau member. Until 2014, he was the main organizer of biennial international meetings on Paleo, Rock and Environmental Magnetism. Since 2012 he acts as editor of Geophysical Journal International.
In addition to the research and research management, he is also involved in education. During 1998-2001 he lectured physical properties of rocks at University Aix-Marseille III in France. Until 2017 he taught the same course at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Charles University in Prague. He also gives lectures on iron oxides in environment (Magnetomineralogy) at Faculty of Natural Sciences, Charles University in Prague; Faculty of Natural Sciences, Masaryk University in Brno, and Helsinki University, Helsinki, Finland (where he received the title Associate Professor in 2016). He established Summer Schools of IAGA and initiated the IAGA Young Researcher Award.
Eduard Petrovský is author or coauthor of more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with a total of more then 2300 citations (without self-citations) and h-index of 27. For a list of papers, click the ORCID link.
