New perspectives in magnetic fabric interpretation through 3D microstructural analysis, numerical modelling and quantum mechanical description (GA22-12828S)

Assessing rock fabric via the anisotropy of magnetic properties is a fast, cheap, and popular method in structural geology. Magnetic fabric is a sensitive recorder of rock deformation and flow in rocks, which permits complex deformation histories to be resolved with numerical modelling. However, major deficiencies in this approach lie with limitations in microstructural analysis and knowledge of mineral magnetic properties. Here, we propose a novel method of modelling rock magnetic properties by exploiting recent progress in microstructure 3D imaging and quantum-mechanical calculations of mineral properties. We will test our approach by investigating two examples of localization of rock deformation; a key part of this test will include defining the dependence of magneto-crystalline anisotropy on chemical composition. We plan to evaluate the contribution of 2D and 3D microstructural methods and potential of the microstructure based modelling for the magnetic fabric interpretation. Our approach can provide also a path to inverse evaluation of unknown rock texture from magnetic fabric data.

Aims

Model of magnetic fabric based on 3D microstructure, numerical modelling and quantum-mechanical calculations. Application of 3D imaging methods for interpretation of process of localization of flow and deformation in rocks. Implementation of quantum-mechanics for mineral properties calculations.
