Team Leader: Jan Burjánek

Our research

Our research activities are mainly oriented toward multidisciplinary research of earthquake generation processes and the propagation of seismic waves. We solve current problems of theory and modelling of wave phenomena in realistic elastic or attenuative, isotropic or anisotropic media of complex structures, plus related seismic source processes of natural and induced earthquakes. The recent developments in observational seismology and computer modelling allow us to apply advanced theoretical approaches in robust geophysical models and methods applicable to earthquake risk mitigation or the oil and geothermal industry.

The group’s main research areas:

  • Moment tensor inversions
  • Induced seismicity
  • Theory of wave propagation in complex structures
  • Multiscale seismic tomography & seismotectonics
  • Seismic response of local geological structures
  • Earthquake hazards
  • Strong motion seismology
  • Laboratory seismology
  • Wave propagation in opaque universe
