RNDr. Vladimír Čermák, DrSc. (1937) po ukončení studia geofyziky na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě University Karlovy v roce 1960 nastoupil v Geofyzikálním ústavu ČSAV jako vědecký asistent. Pracoval v oddělení radiometrie, kde se zaměřil na v té době zcela nový obor geotermika. Zpracoval vrtná teplotní data a připravil mapu tepelného toku Československa. V letech 1968–1970 na studijním pobytu v Dominion Observatory v Kanadě jako jeden z prvních popsal vliv recentních klimatických změn na podpovrchové teplotní pole. V sedmdesátých letech v rámci široké mezinárodní spolupráce připravil mapu tepelného toku Evropy. Aktivně se účastnil odborné i řídící práce v komisi pro tepelný tok Mezinárodní unie geodetické a geofyzikální (IUGG), v letech 1995–1999 byl jejím předsedou. Byl ředitelem Geofyzikálního ústavu AVČR (1991–1998) a vice-presidentem Evropské geofyzikální společnosti (1994–1998). Působil jako svolavatel a organizátor početné řady mezinárodních workshopů a konferencí, byl předsedou LOC 26. Valného zasedání IUGG v Praze (2015), předsedou Českého národního komitétu pro geofyziku a geodezii (1999–2015) a člen řady redakčních rad českých i mezinárodních geofyzikálních časopisů. Je autorem nebo spoluautorem několika vědeckých monografií a více než 300 publikací z oboru geotermiky, stavby zemského tělesa, využívání geotermální energie a tzv. vrtné klimatologie.
